ATHENS POLICE SEARCHING FOR 18-YEAR-OLD SHOOTING SUSPECT
The Athens Police Department is actively searching for an 18-year-old local resident following a shooting at the McMinn Village Apartments. On the day of the incident, officers responded to a shooting complaint at 212 Westside Street, where they discovered several residents gathered outside. According to witness statements and video evidence recovered at the scene, a Black male armed with a rifle fired a shot toward the bystanders. One male victim was struck by the projectile and subsequently transported to an area hospital by a friend; his identity is currently being withheld for his safety.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Cornelius Raeshaun Hurst of Athens. Hurst is now facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and multiple counts of reckless endangerment. The Athens Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is assisting patrol officers, and the investigation remains ongoing.
