ATHENS WOMAN INDICTED AFTER MOTHER’S BODY FOUND IN ROCKWOOD

ROCKWOOD, Tenn. (WATE) — An Athens woman has been indicted by a grand jury on a first-degree murder charge after her mother’s body was found at a Rockwood home in April.

On June 18, Roane County District Attorney Russell Johnson confirmed that Marie Hefner, 50, had been indicted on first-degree murder. She was arrested on April 25.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, they were requested to help with the investigation by 9th Judicial District Attorney General on Sunday, April 21, after a woman’s body was found on April 20. The TBI identified the woman as Bertha Lodewegen, 75.

Investigators determined following the autopsy that the manner of death was homicide, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The arrest warrant obtained by WATE states that Lodewegen’s body was found in the basement of her home with a wound to her neck around 9 a.m. It details the 24 hours before Lodewegen’s body was found.
