AUTHORITIES PLAN TO SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY FOR STEVEN WIGGINS AND ERIKA CASTRO-MILES

District Attorney General Ray Crouch Jr., has announced the state’s intentions for Steven Joshua Wiggins and Erika Castro-Miles. Both are being charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Sgt. Daniel Baker. “Based upon the evidence and aggravating factors in this case, the State will be seeking the death penalty for both defendants,” Crouch said in a statement. Wiggins was captured this morning in Hickman County.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officials said trooper Kevin Burch of the Lawrenceburg District apprehended Wiggins. According to Col. Dereck Stewart, head of the THP, said Burch noticed a man matching the suspect’s description on a Hickman County extension road, near where Sgt. Baker was slain.

When Burch noticed the man’s tattoos, Stewart said, he “knew he had his guy.” Wiggins was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities did not elaborate on whether Wiggins was armed at the time of his arrest; but published reports have confirmed he took Baker’s gun and initially fled in his vehicle.

The TBI said Wiggins was transported to the TriStar Natchez ER in Dickson. Upon his release from the emergency room, Dickson County Sheriff Jeff Bledsoe said Wiggins would be placed in handcuffs – the ones Baker had with him the day he died – and booked into Dickson County Jail.
