BABY FORMULA FACTORY CLOSED AGAIN
STURGIS, Mich —The largest U.S. baby formula factory has closed again. This time the closure is due to thunderstorms and heavy rain that has overwhelmed the city’s stormwater system and flooded some areas of the plant.
“This will likely delay production and distribution of new products for a few weeks,” Abbott Nutrition stated.
The production lines had just started rolling at the Sturgis factory on June 4 for the first time since the company shut down for a U.S. Food & Drug Administration investigation in mid-February.
Abbott said the delay should not worsen the shortage because there was “ample existing supply,” noting that it had produced 8.7 million pounds of infant formula in June for the U.S., the equivalent of 168.2 million 6 oz. feedings. A spokesperson said that represented 95 percent of Abbott’s output before a February product recall and the Sturgis plant closure.
