BEAR SIGHTED IN DOWNTOWN LOUDON; POLICE ISSUE PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT

The Loudon Police Department is warning residents of multiple bear sightings in downtown Loudon, urging the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.

According to the alert, a black bear has been observed in several locations in the downtown area. Police have notified the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), which is aware of the situation and monitoring developments.

Officials emphasize that in most cases, bears are simply passing through the area and will move on if left alone. However, residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to avoid attracting wildlife and to know how to respond if they encounter the animal.

Safety Guidelines from Loudon Police:

Do:

  • – Stay a safe distance away if you see the bear.
  • – Keep children and pets indoors or on a leash.
  • – Secure trash cans, pet food, bird feeders, and other items that may attract wildlife.
  • – If you encounter the bear, remain calm, slowly back away, and give it plenty of space.

Do Not:

  • – Approach, follow, or attempt to feed the bear.
  • – Corner or provoke the animal.
  • – Attempt to take close-up photos or videos.
  • – Leave food or garbage outside where it can attract wildlife.

Police stress that these precautions help protect both the community and local wildlife.

If you see the bear posing an immediate threat to public safety, call 911 immediately.

For non-emergency sightings, contact the Loudon Police Department at 865-458-9081.

The department stated it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Residents are thanked for helping keep the community and wildlife safe.

This is an ongoing situation. Anyone with additional information about the bear’s movements is encouraged to reach out to authorities.
