CUMBERLAND COUNTY MAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES AFTER HIGHWAY 127 TRAFFIC STOP
A Cumberland County man is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on Monday, June 29, 2026, following a traffic stop last month that uncovered a string of alleged offenses, including driving under the influence and possessing a loaded weapon while impaired.
According to court dockets and an affidavit filed by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Lowe, the incident began on May 22, 2026, when Trooper Lowe spotted a southbound vehicle on Highway 127. The vehicle showed signs of recent crash damage and was failing to stay in its lane, prompting a traffic stop.
Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Rex Taylor Honey, the trooper noted a strong odor of alcohol and observed alcoholic beverages in the back seat. When questioned about the extensive damage to his vehicle, Honey reportedly stated he had been cut off on the interstate and struck a cable barrier.
The vehicle’s driver-side door was so badly damaged from the wreck that Honey had to climb out of the passenger side to exit.
While Honey denied having weapons on his person, he informed the trooper that a loaded firearm was inside the vehicle. Trooper Lowe located an unholstered, loaded handgun sitting on the passenger seat and secured it.
Honey subsequently underwent a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, alongside Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) evaluations, including finger-to-nose and balance tests. According to the affidavit, Honey showed clear signs of intoxication and was placed under arrest.
A subsequent inventory of the vehicle prior to towing revealed an open container of Coors Banquet beer.
Honey was transported to the Cumberland County Jail without further incident, where he consented to a voluntary blood draw for chemical testing.
Court records show Honey faces multiple charges stemming from the incident, including:
-
Possession of a handgun while under the influence
-
Leaving the scene of an accident (property damage)
-
Open container violation
-
Failure to maintain lane control (driving on roadways laned for traffic)
Honey’s case is set to be heard on the morning criminal docket this Monday.
