A special benefit was held at the Cumberland County Community Complex today for Deputy Greg Green.

He was working last month at a home as part of his own business while off duty when a ladder he was on slipped. Green fell to the ground and the impact resulted in severe injuries to his neck.

Deputy Green originally began his law enforcement career on June 6, 1992 with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. Through the years he has served with the sheriff’s department and with the Crossville Police Department. Deputy Green is currently assigned to the patrol division and is a SWAT team operator with the sheriff’s office.

“He is dedicated to serving our community and does his job very well,” said Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox. “Deputy Green and I have worked most of our career together. It is an honor to work alongside of him, but it is even more of an honor to call Greg a true friend. He loves his community and truly loves his profession. I ask everyone to keep him, his wife and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Green continues to be treated at an area hospital and will soon be transferred to a specialized unit in Atlanta.

But great news was delivered before the benefit got off the ground today. Green is showing signs of feelings in his fingers after being given a possibility of being paralyzed.

The benefit today featured a 5K run/walk, a chili cook-off, a $10 chili or Flying Pig BBQ lunch and concluded with a silent and live action.

Nearly 200 items including antiques, collectibles, tools, privately donated firearms, furniture, gift cards to restaurants and area attractions appeared in the live action. Numerous items were in the silent auction as well.

Some of the feature items in the live auction was a Smith and Wesson .44 magnum handgun that went for $1,050, a 14’ boat and trailer for $2,300 and a new trailer for $4,800.

Probably the most inventive item was a purse that a worker went around taking up donations from citizens in attendance. Then the purse was auctioned off. It went for well over what was in it at $1,800!

The auction concluded around 4 p.m. and was a great success for Deputy Green and his family.

“On behalf of Greg and his family, the sheriff’s department thanks everyone who was involved in this benefit today,” said Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox. “He is our brother and we greatly appreciate all the support and continued prayers for his recovery.”

A total raised from the benefit was $50,000.
