BILL WOULD REQUIRE MOTHERS TO PROVE CITIZENSHIP TO RECEIVE GOV’T. BENEFITS

An immigrant-rights group is opposing a Tennessee bill that would require mothers to prove U.S. citizenship before receiving government prenatal care and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food benefits.

Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition Co-Executive Director Stephanie Teatro said Republican Rep. Bruce Griffey’s bill goes after U.S. citizen babies born to parents in the country illegally.

The group also opposes another bill sponsored by Griffey, which would limit birth certificates to children of parents in the country legally.

One woman said the bills target Tennessee’s most vulnerable, including her two-month-old son born in the U.S., who would be affected because of her immigration status.

The bills follow 2018 anti sanctuary-city legislation passed by State Legislature.
