BLOUNT FIRE DISTRICT HIT WITH DOUBLE-CHARGING AND MISSING FUNDS COMPLAINTS

Residents of Blount County, Tennessee, are raising concerns about the leadership of the Blount County Fire Protection District, the state’s only subscription-based fire department, following a multi-page letter from employees to county officials detailing multiple issues.
The complaints, which surfaced about six months after a 2025 Tennessee Comptroller’s Office report revealed missing funds from cash subscriptions that were improperly recorded or deposited, include allegations of residents being double-charged without notification or refunds, inconsistent fire coverage despite payments, late fees imposed unfairly, inadequate protective gear for firefighters, low staffing levels, and poor communication from Chief Doug McClanahan, who did not respond to media inquiries.
Blount County Commission Chair Jared Anderson noted that the commission lacks direct oversight but expressed concern and plans to discuss the matter further, emphasizing the importance of reliable fire protection. Mayor Ed Mitchell confirmed awareness of the letter, stated he is collaborating with department leadership on solutions and an action plan, and reassured the public that there are no operational risks to safety, while consulting the Comptroller’s and County Attorney’s offices for next steps.
