BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELDS PULLS FROM 3 MAJOR STATE METROPOLITAN REGIONS
Blue Cross Blue Shield has pulled coverage from the federal health insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act exchange in the Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville areas. An estimated 100,000 state residents are being affected by the pull-out which decreased the company’s participation area from eight to five regions. BCBS Officials say that “there are too many uncertainties to continue participating at a statewide level”, but it doesn’t help that the company has lost nearly $500 million over the last three years. The decision does not affect seniors with Medicare Advantage plans, people with BlueCare, or anyone who has insurance through their employer. In a statement, BlueCross BlueShield said they plan to evaluate the ACA Marketplace moving forward, including a possible return to offering the plans statewide in 2018 if conditions permit.
