BOATING DEATH FRIDAY IN MEIGS COUNTY 11TH OF THE YEAR

A man thought to be in his 70s is dead after drowning near where the Hiwassee and Tennessee Rivers meet in Meigs County, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

TWRA officers and local authorities responded to the drowning man at about 9:45 a.m. on Friday. Officers reported a Dyer County man, who was fishing with a friend, is thought to have suffered a medical emergency and fell into the water.

He was not wearing a life jacket, according to the TWRA.

The angler still on board tried to save the man and called 911, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the 11th boating-related fatality on Tennessee waters this year.
