BOMB THREAT CALLED IN TO 911 DURING THEFT ATTEMPT

On Friday last week at approximately 4:22 a.m. Crossville Police units were dispatched to Walgreens about an ongoing theft. Walgreens described a black Chevrolet Silverado with Tennessee tags as well as a male and female stealing inside the store. Officer Chrystal Massey arrived to see the vehicle attempting to back out of the parking spot whereupon she activated her blue lights, stepped out of the patrol unit, and attempted to make contact with the subjects.

Massey observed a male driver, a middle female passenger, and a male passenger, the 3rd of whom jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot toward McDonald’s. While pursuing the subject, Massey tried using her taser however only one of the probes made contact with the subject’s hoodie and didn’t touch the skin rendering the taser ineffective.

The chase went into the parking lot of McDonald’s and around into Bentell Square. The male was last seen turning the corner toward Walgreens and When Officer Massey made it to the corner she saw the black truck to be gone and assumed the subject had left in the vehicle with the other subjects.

Later, Officer Foster made contact with the vehicle on Highway 127 South and felony stopped it. Within the car or a male and female subject who were immediately detained. On the ground next to the open driver door where the female was removed was a small bag containing .37 g of crystal meth. A search of the vehicle as well as the female’s purse and wallet revealed merchandise believed to belong to Walgreens without a receipt. The female denied the stolen property as well as the meth.

The male subject identified the female subject as Madisyn Sims and said that, while they were in the parking lot of Walgreens, he observed Sims call 911 and call in another vehicle description, saying that the vehicle was making bomb threats. Dispatch confirmed the call coming in from a female caller identified as Madisyn Sims. A Tennessee Department of Corrections card was found in her right pocket with the information of James Coleman. Sims had a local failure to appear and a warrant out of Putnam County.

A booking sheet sent by dispatch confirmed Coleman to be the male subject fleeing the scene from Walgreens. Sims was transported to Cumberland County Justice Center for intake while the male subject was taken out of handcuffs and let go from the scene.

The merchandise, valued at $381.38, was returned to Walgreens. The property stolen by Coleman had fallen out of his pocket during pursuit and was valued at $50.48.

An anonymous source said that the foot pursuit was observed from the McDonald’s drive-thru and they had observed Coleman being chased and his vehicle driving off from the scene. When Coleman had run around the building during the pursuit he hid behind an AC unit and what city units had left the area he ran across Elmore Road and jumped a fence of the abandoned building of an old gas station. Officer Freeman was sent to the area along with Deputy Aytes who successfully located Coleman hiding under the crawl space of the building and took him into custody.

Sims had a Putnam County hold placed and was served a failure to appear, criminal impersonation, misuse of 911 and Non-Emergency situations, theft of property, and simple possession of methamphetamine.

Coleman had one hold out of Putnam County, and three out of Overton. He was charged with Theft of Property and Evading Arrest.
