CONCRETE RAILING FALLS FROM BRIDGE, CRASHES ONTO I-75 IN CHATTANOOGA
One lane of I-75 northbound remains closed today after a large slab of concrete railing fell from a bridge over the roadway at the I-24W split.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol in Chattanooga tweeted that a driver was injured after crashing into the fallen concrete barrier. Authorities from the Chattanooga police and fire departments had initially reported his injuries as “non-life threatening.”
An Erlanger Hospital spokesman today reports the driver is listed in critical condition.
A report from TDOT said this intersection was last inspected on July 19, 2018. At the time, inspectors gave it a fair rating, and declared it structurally sound. It was set to be inspected again in May 2020. They did, however make two recommendations: to remove loose concrete filler beneath the beams and to remove a tree whose roots caused cracks in the concrete to increase in size.
