Construction is underway on the new Cumberland County Archives structure.

What used to be First Baptist Church was converted years ago into the archives building.

The main section of the church remains in good condition.

However, officials found the back area of the church to be in bad shape. It was not suitable to house past and current county vital records.

A demolition crew started last week to remove all the stone from the exterior of the building.

Workers will then level the remainder of the back building and build a new archives structure.

The work should take about a year to complete.
