A 62-year-old Roane County man who tried to flee his own jury trial before being tracked down through an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison to be served at 100%.

Victor Moore was convicted of rape of a child and two counts of aggravated sexual battery involving a 12-year-old victim. Representing himself after firing two previous attorneys, Moore admitted during the trial to the acts but argued that his actions only lasted a few seconds and should not ruin his life.

After attending the first day of trial, Moore cut off his bond and fled. Local law enforcement utilized ALPR cameras to track his vehicle toward Georgia, where authorities apprehended him in Atlanta as he attempted to board a bus bound for Florida. Extradited back to Roane County, the jury ultimately found him guilty on all counts.

During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing before Roane County Criminal Court Judge Jeff Wicks, Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Edwards pressed for the maximum penalty, highlighting Moore’s attempt to flee justice and lack of remorse. Moore requested 10 years of probation, citing his age.

Judge Wicks sentenced Moore to 40 years for child rape and 10 years each on the aggravated sexual battery counts. Because the sentence must be served at 100%, and with lifetime placement on the Sex Offender Registry, the court noted Moore will be approximately 102 years old upon his eventual release.

Following the sentencing, Moore requested an attorney for his upcoming motion for a new trial and subsequent appeals. He remains jailed awaiting transfer to the Tennessee Department of Correction.
