South Willow Avenue in Cookeville was temporarily closed to traffic Thursday morning after a driver reported hearing a suspicious ticking or buzzing sound from inside his vehicle.

Cookeville Police Chief Scott Winfree told the Herald Citizen that the driver suspected a bomb was in the car and contacted authorities. Out of an abundance of caution, the Cookeville Police Department partnered with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) to investigate the scene.

Authorities utilized a robot to inspect the vehicle and determined that the car was clear of any explosive devices. During the brief investigation, CPD officers diverted traffic on South Willow Avenue between Short and Jackson streets.

Police began clearing the scene shortly after 11:13 a.m., and normal traffic flow has since been restored.
