The Crossville Police Department wants to make the city a “No Scam Zone.” Captain Brian Eckelson presented members of the city council a plan to drastically reduce the number of scams in the area. Capt. Eckelson said 2.7 million scams were reported in the United States in 2017, and the number-one way scammers bilk people out of their hard-earned money was associated with the purchase of gift cards, particularly Google Play and iTunes money cards. A scammer might call someone pretending to be a relative who needs quick cash to get out of jail or pay a fine. Dozens of these types of scams are run in Crossville and Cumberland County daily. Crossville Police will be partnering with Crimestoppers, Fairfield Glade Police, local media and stores like Dollar General Store and Walmart, to spread the word. The police department also has a special class prepared to instruct such businesses on how to recognize scam artists.
