CROSSVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR DUI AFTER CRASHING VAN INTO FENCE AT STONE PEAK
On February 13, 2026, Officer Sherrill of the Crossville Police Department responded to a report at Stone Peak regarding an intoxicated employee who had crashed a company van into a gate. Upon arrival, a Security Officer directed Officer Sherrill to a white Ford cargo van parked awkwardly at the entrance, explaining that the driver, Michael Hooverβan employee who had come to quitβhad been on the property for about an hour, left briefly, and then returned to return a keycard.
According toΒ the security officer, Hoover sat at the blocked gate before reversing and striking the surrounding fence, though Officer Sherrill noted no visible fence damage but observed fresh scrapes on the van’s rear passenger-side fender consistent with the impact. Hoover remained in the vehicle afterward.
Officer Sherrill approached Hoover at the passenger window and instructed him to park and shut off the van, which he claimed he had already done, though the keys were still in the ignition. Hoover displayed slow, slurred speech, watery red eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. When asked to exit the vehicle, he struggled with balance and swayed while standing. Hoover admitted to drinking two large beers around noon but denied any alcohol since then. He initially refused Standardized Field Sobriety Tests due to a rod in his leg affecting balance but agreed to non-balance tests.
Officer Sherrill administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, observing lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus, and onset before 45 degrees in both eyes, with no vertical nystagmus. A Modified Romberg test was attempted, during which Hoover swayed significantly, appeared to fall asleep at one point, and raised safety concerns, leading Officer Sherrill to stop the test early at around two minutes.
After allowing Hoover to arrange for his van’s pickup by family, Officer Sherrill placed him under arrest. Specialist Zimmerman conducted a search incident to arrest and discovered a disposable coffee cup in the van’s cup holder containing a foamy, yellowish liquid that smelled like beer; Hoover later confirmed during transport to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office that it contained beer. A search warrant was obtained and executed for blood draws at Cumberland Medical Center, where two vials of Hoover’s blood were collected.
He was then returned to the sheriff’s office and charged with Driving Under the Influence. Specialist Zimmerman also completed a crash report at the request of Stone Peak management regarding the fence damage.
