CROSSVILLE MOURNS THE PASSING OF FORMER MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBER JAMES MAYBERRY
The Crossville and Cumberland County communities are in mourning following the sudden passing of former Crossville Mayor and current City Council Member James Mayberry. Local leaders and government officials have flooded social media with tributes, remembering Mayberry as a fierce, dedicated public servant, a loyal friend, and a steady guiding hand for the community.
In honor of his extensive service, Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster has directed all county-owned flags to be flown at half-staff.
A “Hammer” for the Community
Mayor Foster shared a deeply personal tribute to his longtime friend and mentor, whom he affectionately nicknamed “The Hammer.” Foster recalled an unforgettable meeting with state officials in Nashville where Mayberry passionately and fearlessly advocated for Crossville’s needs.
“While most politicians reach for diplomacy first, James reached for the hammer,” Foster said. “Behind that toughness was a loyal friend who genuinely loved this community. In some of my hardest moments, he showed up without needing to be asked.”
Upon Mayberry’s retirement as mayor, Foster had even presented him with a plaque featuring a gold hammer to commemorate his unyielding advocacy.
A Legacy of Quiet Impact
Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives Cameron Sexton also expressed his shock and sadness over the news, highlighting Mayberry’s humble approach to leadership. Sexton noted that while Mayberry achieved great things for Crossville—ranging from tough negotiations with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to championing the arrival of Buc-ee’s—he never sought the spotlight.
“He did many amazing things for our community… most of which we don’t [know], because he was never looking for credit,” Sexton said, remembering Mayberry as “always warm, always kind, and always steady at the helm.”
