Quick action from two Crossville police officers yesterday prevented a woman from being scammed out of $8,200. Officers responded to Staples where the lady in her 80’s told Officer Tyrel Lorenz a person contacted her by phone claiming to be her grandson and needed the money to bail out of jail. (This is one of the more popular scams circulating today) She was convinced to mail the cash wrapped in a sweater to a Mark Williams in Providence, Rhode Island. Multiple calls to UPS were made in an effort to stop the driver with the package. However, the report says UPS offered police no help in finding the driver. Officer Sadula made contact with a UPS driver in town who assisted in locate the delivery truck in question. Lt. Qualls responded and got the package. The money was returned to the woman and her shipping charge was refunded by Staples. Crossville police contacted the fraud department of the Providence, Rhode Island police department to inform them of the incident.
