The Crossville Police Department, working in conjunction with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, will be conducting sobriety checkpoints February 21, 2020 from 5 until 10 p.m. During this time period, officers will set up on Lantana Road and U.S. Highway 127 in an effort to cut down on impaired driving. Please use caution when driving in these areas. Do not approach checkpoints with your high-beam headlights on, and always slow down when approaching the checkpoint areas.

The main reason why law enforcement agencies announce when and where they plan to do sobriety checkpoints is because they are legally required to do so. In 1990, the concept of DUI checkpoints was legally challenged on the basis that they violated Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. Therefore, not publicizing the roads used by police for DUI checkpoints is a violation of the Fourth Amendment, and any evidence obtained at a checkpoint would not be legally permitted in court.
