CROSSVILLE WOMAN ENCOUNTERS DATING APP SCAM
On April 17, 2025, Officer Matthew Charlock responded to a report at the Cumberland County Justice Center. The complainant met a man, approximately 50-60 years old, using the screen name Mark Walker on the dating app OK Cupid. After initially refusing his requests for money and blocking him, she reconnected via WhatsApp.
The man, claiming to live in Texas and work on oil rigs, asked her to transfer money from his account to others he owed, starting with $1,500 and escalating to $26,000. Growing suspicious of potential money laundering, she ceased contact. He then requested gift cards. Her account was not compromised, and she lost no money.
Screenshots of their conversations, including bank details and transfer instructions, were collected, stored on a DVD-R, and placed into evidence at the Crossville Police Department.
