CROSSVILLE WOMAN FALLS VICTIM TO FACEBOOK RENTAL SCAM, LOSES HUNDREDS TO FAKE AGENT

On April 1, 2026, Crossville Police Department officers were dispatched to the Cumberland County Justice Center regarding a possible rental scam. A woman reported that she had joined a Facebook group for people looking to rent a house. She was then contacted via Facebook Messenger by an individual identifying as “Agent Andrew,” who claimed to have found a suitable rental property at 1120 4th Street in Crossville.

“Agent Andrew” instructed her to pay a $50 application fee to a Chime account under the name “Christian-Clark-149.” He also requested that she and her companion handwrite answers to a list of questions and send photos of the answers, along with pictures of their driver’s licenses and Social Security cards. She was then asked to pay a $100 “key fee” to a Chime account named “Jonathan Martinez-810” and an additional $100 “maintenance fee” to a Chime account under “Susan-Vaupell.”

“Agent Andrew” arranged to show the property at 4:00 PM that day, but never followed up or messaged them. When the woman inquired about the showing, he demanded an additional $200 utility fee, which she refused. Her companion went to the 4th Street address and spoke with the current resident, who confirmed the property was not for rent. Both the victim and her companion then ceased communication with the suspected scammer.

As of yet, no arrests have been made as no suspect has been identified.
