CROSSVILLE WOMAN FALLS VICTIM TO NORTON ANTI-VIRUS SCAM

On Tuesday, a woman came to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office to report that she noticed a bill from Norton AntiVirus on her home computer the day before. She called the phone number listed on the bill to cancel the account and spoke with someone who told her that they would cancel the account and give her a refund.

The man asked for her bank routing number and account number to do the refund, to which she gave him the information. The man told her the refund would be for $249.99 but then said that he had refunded $2,000 too much and asked her to go to Kroger and buy Apple cards for the difference.

She told him to just refund it on her account and he told her that he couldn’t and that she had to go get the Apple cards and pay the money back.

She did as instructed but only purchased three $500 cards as that was all the money she had in that account. On the way home she realized she had been scammed. On Tuesday, she went to her bank and discovered that all four of her bank accounts, as well as her husband’s checking account that had her name in it, had been wiped out.

Together the woman and her husband had been scammed for over $1,300.
