DRUNK MAN NEARLY RUNS OVER DEPUTY
Yesterday, Deputy Shane Henderson was conducting traffic control for the Tennessee Highway Patrol while they were working on an accident involving a death in the area of Highway 70 West. The highway was closed to one lane and the deputy had the traffic going west stopped so that the traffic going east could get through.
As he was waiting for the traffic to clear, he observed a black and silver Ford Focus failed to stop and proceed to pass the vehicles that he had stopped. The deputy gave verbal commands for the driver to stop and even had to jump out of the way to keep from getting hit by the vehicle.
The vehicle then made an abrupt stop and as the deputy approached the driver’s side window he noticed the smell of alcohol coming from it. The driver, identified as Justin Taylor, was asked what he was doing to which Taylor said he was going slow.
The driver was observed to have slurred speech and watery bloodshot eyes. The deputy asked him if he had any alcohol, but he just sat there not saying anything and then eventually replied with a no.
After being asked to exit the vehicle, Taylor had to use the driver’s door to keep his balance on the way out. He would lean on the vehicle and use it to help with his balance which is when he then said that he had been drinking and lived just down the road. He kept telling the deputy that he couldn’t do this to him.
Taylor failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI and taken to Cumberland County jail. He became non-compliant when taken to intake for a blood draw, refusing to let the nurse draw his blood.
He had to be handcuffed and placed into a chair whereupon two vials were drawn from him and placed into evidence to be sent off to the labs for testing.
