CROSSVILLE WOMAN GETS SCAMMED OUT OF $237,000

In early December a woman came into the Justice Center to report fraud. The female alleged she had been scammed out of $237,000. She stated she had ordered something from Amazon and had an issue with the packaging. She stated that in November, she googled Amazon customer service, instead of looking it up on the Amazon website, and found a number. When she called, she spoke with a man that went by the name “Peter Campbell” who told her that her account had been hacked and they had access to her information. He advised her to go out and buy cryptocurrency and gift cards and give the numbers to him over the phone. He told her that he would be able to put money back in her account in about seven days, therefore, she gave him her bank information and social security number. However, “Peter” kept telling her to go buy more and more gift cards up until 11/28/22. She gave him all of the numbers off of the gift cards, with a total loss of $237,000.

The female kept all of the receipts of her transactions, which she placed into a box for evidence.
