CUMBERLAND CO. COMMISSION PASSES RESOLUTION NAMING SECTION OF HIGHWAY 68 TO HONOR TWO FALLEN VETERANS
The Cumberland County Commission last night passed a resolution to name a section of highway in honor of two fallen veterans. It states Cumberland County natives and cousins Lynne C. Hayes and Jesse B. Hayes served and both were killed under hostile conditions in Vietnam.
The resolution will name the stretch of Highway 68 running from the entrance to the exit of Grassy Cove in honor of the two. The resolution now goes to the state for final consideration.
Lynne Hayes attended Grassy Cove Academy while Jessie Hayes attended Grandview School.
SP4 Lynne Hayes was killed May 17, 1967 in Binh Duong, Vietnam. He was buried in Grassy Cove Cemetery. His name is on the Vietnam Veteran’s Wall in the War Memorial in Crossville.
SP4 Jesse Hayes was killed January 9, 1969 in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam. He was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery. His name is also on the Vietnam Veteran’s Wall in the War Memorial in Crossville. For his dedication to the U.S. Army, Jesse was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart.
