CUMBERLAND CO. COMMISSION TO CONSIDER NAMING SECTION OF HIGHWAY TO HONOR TWO FALLEN VETERANS

The Cumberland County Commission later this month will consider a resolution to name a section of highway in honor of two fallen veterans. The resolution was introduced late yesterday by Commissioner Wendell Wilson at the Building and Grounds Committee meeting. It states Cumberland County natives and brother Lynne C. Hayes and Jesse B. Hayes served and both were killed under hostile conditions in Vietnam.

The resolution would name the stretch of Highway 68 running from the entrance to the exit of Grassy Cove in honor of the two. If passed by the county commission, it would go on to the state for final consideration.

Lynne Hayes attended Grassy Cove Academy while Jessie Hayes attended Grandview School.

SP4 Lynne Hayes was killed May 17, 1967 in Binh Duong, Vietnam. He was buried in Grassy Cove Cemetery. His name is on the Vietnam Veteran’s Wall in the War Memorial in Crossville.

SP4 Jesse Hayes was killed January 9, 1969 in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam. He was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery. His name is also on the Vietnam Veteran’s Wall in the War Memorial in Crossville. For his dedication to the U.S. Army, Jesse was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart.
