CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOE VOTES TO ALLOW PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENT TO PLAY MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
The Cumberland County Board of Education addressed a problem which has come before their group in the past: whether or not a privately-schooled student should be allowed to play on a middle-school team. The father of the student came before the board and stated that fees had been paid and that the student was told that he would be eligible to play. Recently, the parents were told the reverse and that he could not be on the Stone Middle School team. Rep. Josh Stone made the motion to allow a one-time exception to the school’s policy. Board Chair Teresa Boston stated that she had read the policy and that there was “availability” there. Most agreed that the policy needed to be a “cooperative” one and that it would have to be addressed in the future. The motion to allow the boy to play passed 8-1 with board member Jim Inman casting the single vote against. Rep.Tom Netherton wrapped up the agenda item stating that a “precedent had been set.”
