CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Cumberland County Commission convened in May 2025, with all Commissioners present except Potter, York, Shanks, and Sherrill.

The meeting opened with a tribute to Abby Grace Lowe, a CCHS student and granddaughter of Commissioner Terry Lowe, who received a Certificate of Achievement for her election as President of the Tennessee FCCLA, highlighting the exceptional leadership of the county’s youth.

The Commission addressed several resolutions: reappointments to the County Board of Health (Dr. Danny Hall, Dr. Christopher Bell, Dr. Randall Crowder, Jim Petty, and Becki Hillis, terms expiring May 31, 2029), the E-911 Board (Nathan Brock, term expiring May 31, 2029), and the Library Board (Anne Koci for a first term, Melanie Sherrill and Howie Peebles for second terms, expiring June 30, 2028).

A lease agreement was approved to allow the City of Crossville to pave county property for public parking, and speed limits on county roads in Fairfield Glade and Lake Tansi were set at 30 MPH. Routine budget amendments were passed for various departments, including school funds, wage scales, juvenile court, the local health center, and the courthouse.

However, updates to the personnel policy, covering overtime, compensatory time, longevity pay, nursing mothers’ policy, discipline, and Highway Department on-call pay, were tabled for further discussion.

Financially, the Codes Department issued 37 residential, one commercial, 30 mechanical, and 28 plumbing permits, collecting $52,803. EMS collections reached $785,440 in April, with a year-to-date total of $4,146,738, surpassing annual projections by $396,742. April sales tax collections for the Board of Education were $1,149,333, slightly below monthly projections but $138,852 above year-to-date projections.

Property tax collections stood at 97.4% compared to 100.02% the prior year, while hotel/motel tax collections reached $877,337 (70.12% of the annual budget), and prisoner boarding collections hit $361,825, nearing the $386,952 annual budget.
