CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Cumberland County Commission held its monthly meeting on August 18, 2025, with all members in attendance except Commissioners Sherrill, Holbrook, and Patterson. Several resolutions were considered, focusing primarily on appointments and policy adjustments.

Resolutions successfully passed included reappointing Valorie Douglas and Christy Dolinich to the Crossville-Cumberland County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau (15-0 vote), reappointing Casey Cox and Gary Adams to the E-911 Emergency Communications District Board (unanimous), reappointing John Stubbs to the Regional Planning Commission (15-0), appointing Michaela Smith to a two-year term and Joseph Moodey to a six-month term as Judicial Commissioners (unanimous), appointing Linda Weis to the Cumberland County Library Board to fill a vacancy until June 30, 2027 (15-0), and adopting a 35 MPH speed limit on Breckenridge Drive, effective upon signage installation at the resident’s expense (unanimous).

However, two resolutions failed: one to amend the Mineral Severance Tax, gradually increasing the rate from 15 cents to 30 cents per ton by July 1, 2035, to fund road maintenance without relying solely on property taxes, which fell short in an 8-7 vote requiring 10 approvals; and another to introduce fees for Regional Planning Commission services, such as $100 plus $25 per lot for preliminary plats and $300 for road list requests, aimed at shifting costs to users rather than taxpayers, which failed 7-8.

In the financial update, the Codes Department reported issuing 38 residential and 2 commercial building permits, 42 mechanical permits, and 44 plumbing permits in July 2025, collecting $56,365 in fees, with no significant financial report available due to the recent budget passage.
