CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS (MAY 18TH, 2026)
The Cumberland County Commission held its monthly meeting on May 18, 2026, with all commissioners present except Commissioner Holbrook. The session opened with a welcome to Boy Scout Troop 374, who attended as part of earning their Citizenship in the Community merit badge. Commissioners highlighted the value of engaging young people in local government.
The commission approved several resolutions. It appointed Craig Clark as an additional member to the Cumberland County Board of Equalization (required by state law due to Crossville’s population) and confirmed the full board through April 30, 2028 (15-0 vote, with Commissioner Seiber abstaining). It also appointed Sixth District Commissioner Joe Sherrill to fill a vacancy on the Financial Management & Purchasing Committee through August 31, 2026.
In a key action, the commission unanimously approved an Energy Siting Agreement for the proposed Silicon Ranch solar farm. Although the project would proceed regardless of the county’s vote, approval secured important protections for residents, including setbacks, vegetative buffers, third-party inspections, road repairs, emergency access, decommissioning requirements, and a $230,000 community benefit fee. Other approvals included easement deeds to support the City of Crossville’s downtown traffic signal replacement project at the courthouse (16-0) and the updated Cumberland County Parks and Recreation Master Plan, required every three years for state grant eligibility.
Routine budget amendments were also approved for various county departments and schools. Financially, April 2026 saw the Codes Department issue numerous building, mechanical, and plumbing permits, collecting $56,238 in fees (up from the prior year). EMS collections exceeded monthly estimates, sales tax revenue was strong, property tax collections reached 99.63%, and prisoner boarding payments were significantly ahead of the prior year.
Separately, the county announced an Open House on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 4-6 PM at the downtown Courthouse (2 North Main Street) to showcase recent repairs and renovations, followed by the first Friday at the Crossroads event, with a ribbon cutting at 5 PM.
