CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSION VOTES TO LEAVE TWO VACANT SEATS UNFILLED UNTIL ELECTION
The Cumberland County Commission held its monthly meeting with all members present except Commissioner Wilson.
The meeting opened with a moment of silence honoring two recent losses: Miss Nancy and Mrs. Anita Hale of the Fourth District Board of Education, who passed away shortly before the meeting. Mrs. Hale was remembered as a kind and compassionate person who will be greatly missed.
In new business, the Commission addressed two vacancies. First, they discussed the Second District Commissioner seat, which became vacant effective April 20, 2026, following the passing of Commissioner Hyder. After receiving guidance from the County Attorney, the Commissioners voted unanimously 16-0 to leave the seat vacant until it is filled by voters in the August election. Since Commissioner Hyder was on the ballot, the race will proceed as a write-in contest, with information on write-in candidacy available through the Election Commission.
The Commission also addressed the Fourth District Board of Education vacancy, originally set to take effect May 1, 2026, due to Mrs. Anita Haleβs resignation. Given her recent passing, the seat is now vacant. Following the same legal guidance, the Commissioners again voted unanimously 16-0 to leave the seat vacant until the August election. Because no election was previously scheduled for this seat and no candidate was on the ballot, the Cumberland County Election Commission will begin issuing independent petitions starting tomorrow. The Republican and Democratic parties may also choose to caucus for the position.
