CUMBERLAND COUNTY PURSUIT ENDS WITH DAMAGED PATROL UNIT AND A CAR IN THE DITCH

On Friday, an officer went to serve a warrant to David Proffitt on Carter Town Road in Cumberland County. When the officer knocked on the door, he noticed a red honda civic in the driveway begin to start. The driver, David Proffitt looked back at the officer and began to drive down the driveway. The officer initiated his emergency lights and got behind the vehicle towards West Creston Road. The car began to accelerate rapidly. Proffitt ignored the commands from the officer on the P.A. system and traveled towards HWY 70 North where another officer had deployed Stop Sticks. Proffitt looked back at the officer and mouthed “I am not stopping” and accelerated causing the tires to spin. He drove over the Stop Sticks losing air in the front passenger tire.  The vehicle came to a stop, and when officers approached the vehicle to try to break the window, Proffitt hit the gas and struck a patrol car. The pursuit continued outbound on Claysville Road at extremely slow speeds between 8-15mph. Proffitt drove over more Stop Sticks causing another flat tire. Proffitt continued on. Officers did not want Proffitt to get on HWY 70 so an officer used the push bar on their patrol car to push the civic into a ditch on Claysville Access Road.

After breaking the car’s window with a baton, Proffitt continued to fight officers once they got him out of the car.

David Proffitt was placed in custody and charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, vandalism, and violation of probation.
