CUMBERLAND COUNTY SUFFERS STORM DAMAGE

Cumberland County suffered considerable damage from last night’s storms and tornadoes. This morning, county work crews cleared brush and fallen trees from roads while workers with Volunteer Energy Cooperative fixed downed power poles and electric wires.

One woman from Blaylock Road said she saw and heard a rain-wrapped tornado go across her family’s fields right as the National Weather Service’s warning rang phones across the region. That same woman also reported a medium-sized tree lying on top of her family’s home, uprooted from her front yard and tilted onto the roof.

One man said a trampoline on his neighbor’s lawn was pulled a full half mile down the road, only to land upside down in the driveway of a distant neighbor.

Currently, 1,492 homes are still without power, and homes in the Vandever and Blaylock Rd areas only had power restored at around 3 in the morning, no doubt suffering sleep in balmy humidity. Most of the homes still affected by the outage are in the areas of Highway 127 and Lake Tansi.
