Cumberland County has now added Juneteenth as a holiday observed by the county. The county tends to mimic the state of Tennessee in holidays and starting this year, all county and state offices will be closed.

On May 5, Governor Bill Lee signed a bill into a law that would recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday. The law will take effect this June and all state offices will be closed on June 19th.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.”

President Joe Biden signed the legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021.
