CUMBERLAND COURTHOUSE RENOVATION EXPECTED TO FINISH IN MAY

According to a report by the Crossville Chronicle, renovation of the historic Cumberland County Courthouse at 2 N. Main Street in Crossville is progressing well, with exterior scaffolding recently removed, though full completion is not expected until May 2026 or earlier. Architect Kevin Chamberlin of Upland Design Group told the county’s building and grounds committee that minor unforeseen issues typical of older structures have arisen but are being covered by contingency funds and have not caused major delays.

County Mayor Allen Foster emphasized that the building was already closed for over a year for prior structural repairs before Stubbs Construction began the current renovation phase in early 2025, and praised the smooth progress despite county offices remaining partially occupied and staff having to relocate during construction. Foster also addressed and refuted a misleading social media post claiming the county had added new brick to the Main Street entrance, clarifying that workers simply removed deteriorating, asbestos-containing stucco or concrete that had covered the courthouse’s original red brick, which has now been cleaned and exposed.

He noted the exposed original brick currently looks good in his view, but any decision to re-cover, paint, or leave it as-is will ultimately be made by the building and grounds committee and the full county commission.
