DAD OF 3-YEAR-OLD SHOT AND KILLED SURRENDERS TO POLICE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The father of a 3-year-old has been arrested on multiple charges surrounding the death of his son on Wednesday night.
Metro Nashville Police said D’Andre Pruitt, 23, has been charged with reckless homicide, child neglect and evidence tampering in the shooting death of 3-year-old Aydeen Pruitt.
Police said he arranged with a local pastor to surrender to police Thursday afternoon at a church. During an interview with detectives, Pruitt said he removed a pistol from his pocket and placed it on the floor of a bedroom. He told detectives that he didn’t realize Aydeen was present in the bedroom when the child picked up the gun and shot himself in the head.
Pruitt fled from the family’s Oakwood Avenue apartment after the shooting on Wednesday night.
Aydeen was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt where he died shortly after arriving.
Officers responded to the family’s apartment in the 2000 block of Oakwood Avenue just before 9 p.m. The child suffered a gunshot wound to his head and was rushed to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The child’s mother told detectives that she was in the kitchen when she heard a loud pop come from the bedroom, according to MNPD. She said shortly afterward, Dandre ran out of the room. He reportedly fled the apartment complex with the gun in a white Kia Soul.
