DEPUTY STEVE HINKLE, SHOT DURING BLOUNTVILLE STANDOFF, HAS DIED
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Hinkle has died. Hinkle, shot during a standoff at a Blountville home on Saturday, died Tuesday afternoon at an area hospital.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported deputies had received a request to perform a welfare check on 44-year-old Jackie Scott Pendergrass. The man had barricaded himself inside the home and fired on deputies when they approached. Pendergrass was later found dead inside the home. The shooting is still under investigation.
Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy promoted the 65-year-old Hinkle to sergeant in a private ceremony.
