On July 31, 2025, a three-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 40 westbound in Cumberland County at mile marker 334.8. The incident involved a 2025 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by 21-year-old Kayla Larson from Ohio, a 1990 Chevy Silverado driven by 60-year-old Gerardo Diaz from Tennessee, and a 2018 Freightliner box truck driven by 59-year-old Barrie A. Sherriff from New York.

All drivers were wearing seat belts. Traffic had stopped in the right lane for unknown reasons, and while Larson and Diaz were able to stop their vehicles, Sherriff’s box truck failed to stop in time, colliding with Diaz’s Silverado and pushing it into Larson’s tractor-trailer. Diaz was injured in the crash, while Larson and Sherriff were not.

No passengers were reported in any of the vehicles. Sherriff faces a charge of following improperly, pending investigation, while no charges have been filed against Larson or Diaz.
