EAST TENNESSEE EARTHQUAKE RANKS AMONG STRONGEST IN REGION’S HISTORY
The United States Geological Survey says a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck East Tennessee on Saturday, ranking as the fourth-strongest in the region’s history.
The strongest recorded earthquake in the area was a 4.7 magnitude event in Maryville in 1973, followed by a 4.4 magnitude quake in Decatur in 2018 and a 4.2 magnitude quake in Vonore in 1987.
Other notable quakes include 4.1 magnitude in Ridgely (1974), 4.0 magnitude in Ridgely (2005), and 3.8 magnitude in Fincastle (2020).
