Deputy Jason Powers responded to the area of Ackia Drive in Tansi on Saturday to assist Tansi Sgt. K. Austin with a physical domestic assault involving a gun. Upon arriving, Sgt. Austin was already placing an elderly male in custody.

The male subject, identified as Douglas McCallister, was placed in Deputy Powers’ patrol unit, and Sgt. Austin said that the male was the suspect and was getting belligerent prior to the deputy’s arrival.

There were several other people and witnesses on the scene, and the victim was taken into the house away from the suspect. The victim explained that she and Douglas were still married but had been separated for months pending a divorce and that she was living there. She said that she noticed the white van, driven by Douglas, followed her from Dunbar Road.

She didn’t know it was Douglas, but the van had stopped in the road behind her vehicle, and as she was turning to exit her vehicle Douglas was already in her face, saying “You’re going with me.” When she told him ‘no’, he said to her “I’ll kill you here.” The victim said Douglas had a gun in his hand and tried to force her into the van, and that is when the neighbor from across the street started yelling for him to stop and think about things.

Then, another witness came up and stopped Douglas.

Deputy Powers spoke to the neighbor who said that he had come around the corner of his house and saw a man aggressively pulling a woman toward his car. The woman was yelling for the man to stop and leave her alone. He walked to the street and yelled for the man to “STOP” and to “give it 2 minutes,” hoping that it would calm things down.

The man was on the opposite side of the van away from him and raised his hand to show him that he had a gun. The neighbor then backed away and yelled for his brother to call 911, which is when more neighbors came out and the neighbor took charge.

While speaking with the witness, he said that he was in his garage behind his house and heard a commotion in the street and heard his neighbor yelling “STOP.”  The witness then came up and saw his father, pointing his gun pointed at an older man, Douglas, who was standing on the road and was holding his father’s girlfriend, the victim, and was trying to force her into the van.

The witness got his father’s gun from him and as he got closer, noticed that Douglas also had a gun. Douglas laid his gun on the back seat of the van and the witness handed the gun back to his father. The witness then attempted to get between Douglas and his gun and that was when Douglas tried to go for the gun again, but the witness wrestled him away from the gun. When he could, the witness took Douglas’ gun, cleared the weapon, and told Douglas that he was detained.

Tansi Sgt. Austin arrived on the scene shortly after.

Deputy Leary arrived on the scene to assist and transported Mr. McCallister to intake for booking. Douglas McCallister was charged with Aggravated Domestic Assault, Aggravated Assault, and Attempted Especially Aggravated Kidnapping.
