ELECTRIC BICYCLES RECALLED FOR FIRE HAZARD
On May 1, 2025, Santa Cruz Bicycles recalled approximately 2,850 Heckler 9 Electric Bicycles in the U.S. (plus 550 in Canada) due to a fire hazard caused by the bicycles’ 720W lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat.
The affected bicycles, identifiable by “SANTA CRUZ” on the downtube and “Heckler” on the top tube and chainstay, were sold in colors like Gloss Avocado Green and Maritime Gray at Santa Cruz dealers nationwide from October 2021 to January 2025 for $8,750 to $13,900.
Consumers are urged to stop using the bicycles immediately, disconnect the battery, and visit https://santacruzbicycles.com/pages/recall-heckler-9-lithium-ion-battery to confirm if their bike is affected and register for a free replacement battery. Recalled batteries must be marked “Recalled,” photographed, and disposed of at a municipal household hazardous waste facility, as they pose a significant fire risk and cannot be discarded in regular trash or recycling.
Three fire incidents, including some property damage but no injuries, have been reported. For assistance, contact Santa Cruz Bicycles at 833-944-8335 or online.
