FAIRFIELD MAN LOSES $95,000 IN CHASE BANK SCAM
On Monday, Sergeant Jamie Wyatt with the Fairfield Glade Police Department spoke to a man in the lobby about a scam he was involved in. He said that on Tuesday last week, he visited the Farragut branch of Chase Bank to deposit two checks into his account, and said the teller that helped him that day mentioned to him that she was from Long Beach, California.
The man then said the next day he was contacted via phone by a man claiming to be “James Lapoint” and then by a man and woman by the names of “Gary” and “Marsha”. He said he was initially told by these people that they were management from Chase Bank and that Gary and Marsha gained entry into his phone somehow and set up a Zelle account for him.
He was also contacted by a woman claiming to be “Jennifer Moore” who said she was called to help him transfer money from his personal account into another account they set up.
They also told him they were working for the FBI and they were working a case against Chase Bank believing the bank was involved with organized crime and was giving personal bank information to a crime ring. They told him not to tell anyone and that if he transferred his money into this other account until the investigation was over, his money would be safe. They also told him this organized crime ring has ties to Long Beach.
On Wednesday last week, he transferred $50,000 into an account, and the next day he sent two Zelle transfers in the amounts of $2,000 and $3,000 into a Zelle account. And the next day he sent an additional $40,000 to the previous account.
When asking questions about their actual ties to the FBI such as badge numbers and the name of an attorney, they would not give him any answers. He said they sent him a picture of the FBI building in New York City along with the address to the building, but that was all they would provide.
Currently, the victim has talked to investigator Fatima Pena who has obtained more information about the incident and an IC3 report will be filed on behalf of the victim.
