FAKE GOVERNMENT LETTER LEADS TO CREDIT CARD SCAM
On Friday last week, Deputy Tashua Stone spoke with an individual at the Cumberland County Justice Center about receiving a letter from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security regarding his licenses due to expire.
The person said when they scanned the QR code it sent them through steps and when entering his car to pay the $54 for renewal, it redirected once his card information was loaded, and that’s when charges started being filed on his credit card.
They then called their credit card company and disputed the charges and the company canceled the card right away. The person asked for a report to be made to be safe, just in case any other of his information was taken and future charges happened in his name.
The letter he received in the mail had an enclosed envelope with a PO box based in Nashville.
