The National Weather Service has issued a FLASH FLOOD WATCH for the entire coverage area. It went into effect at 11:30 a.m. central today (Wednesday, February 12, 2020) and is scheduled to expire 6 a.m. central tomorrow morning (Thursday, February 13, 2020)

This watch includes the following counties of: ANDERSON, BLEDSOE, BRADLEY, CLAY, CUMBERLAND, FENTRESS, LOUDON, KNOX, McMINN, MEIGS, MONROE, MORGAN, OVERTON, PICKETT, PUTNAM, RHEA, ROANE, and WHITE.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected late this afternoon and early tonight. Rainfall rates of 2 inches in an hour can be expected this afternoon and evening when a line of storms moves through the mid-state. This will lead to an increasing threat of flash flooding in the watch area this evening. Rapid rises on area rivers, creeks, and streams will be possible.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued. If you live in a low area prone to flooding or near a creek or river, have plans ready to possibly evacuate if waters get close to your home.

According to staff meteorologist Steve Norris, Cumberland County recorded nearly 9 inches of rain in the past 12 days…..and that total continues to rise and will certainly spike overnight.
