FORMER CUMBERLAND COUNTY SOLID WASTE DIRECTOR FIRED THIS WEEK AFTER BEING INDICTED LAST YEAR

The Former Cumberland County Waste Director who was indicted by a grand jury just over a year ago for sexual misconduct was fired from his position just this past week. County Mayor Allen Foster announced the firing of Michael Harvel on Friday, March 22. Harvel was indicted in Feb. 2018 on two counts of sexual battery, and one count each of assault and official misconduct. The case was investigated by the Crossville Police Department. Court papers indicate that Harvel allegedly caused physical contact to a female in early February of 2018 resulting in the assault charge. The sexual battery indictments stem from two separate incidents involving a female, one reportedly between early August 2017 and October 2017 and the other between early January and late February of 2018. The final charge of official misconduct comes from an alleged incident between early June 2016 and February of 2018 where, according to the indictment, Harvel committed an offense with intent to obtain a benefit or to harm another and receive a benefit not otherwise authorized by law. Harvel had been removed from the solid waste facility and has been out of the public’s eye for several months, but was still being employed by the county in some capacity. He had formerly worked for the county road dept. and had also been a former county commissioner.
