FORMER KNOX COUNTY JUDGE BAUMGARTNER FOUND DEAD

A former Knox County judge who was surrounded by controversy in recent years was found dead in his home Tuesday afternoon. Officials say that 70-year-old Richard Baumgartner was found unresponsive by family members around 4:15 PM. There were no signs of foul play. The body has been turned over to the Regional Forensic Center for determination of the cause of death by the Medical Examiner. Baumgartner was previously arrested and charged in 2011 after he admitted to trying to buy prescription painkillers from a felon under his legal supervision between November 2009 and September 2010. Many high-profile cases came across his bench, including that of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome.
