FORMER UCDD DIRECTOR ASKINS TO APPEAR FOR SENTENCING TODAY

The former director of the Upper Cumberland Development District will be in court today for a sentencing hearing. Wendy Askins will appear in Federal Court for the initial sentencing in the “Living the Dream” case. In 2010 Askins allegedly used money that had been earmarked for low-cost housing for seniors and developed a multi-million dollar home that she and her daughter lived in. In August, she pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of federal funds in exchange for plea-bargaining. Some are now saying that the plea-agreement, which could possibly see Askins serve 18 months and make $233,000 in restitution with the remaining counts dismissed. Other officials say that she should serve more time in reference to an “obstruction of justice” charge. Askins reportedly instructed former deputy director Larry Webb to alter delete recordings of previous meetings in a cover-up attempt. Webb has pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud. Askins will next appear in State Court Monday to enter a plea, with both sentences to be served concurrently.
