GALLATIN TVA PLANT ORDERED TO MOVE COAL ASH

The Tennessee Valley Authority has been ordered to dig up coal ash from its’ Gallatin plant and re-locate it to a landfill with a protective liner. The order was issued by a federal judge and is the first of its’ kind. The lawsuit was brought about by the Tennessee Clean Water Network and Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association in order to protect waters from the spreading contaminants. They claim the coal ash ponds are a health hazard and a danger to the public. The Gallatin plant is next Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland River. A TVA spokesperson says, it’s too early to say if TVA will appeal, and that they are reviewing the order to determine its next steps. The TVA maintains, there are no adverse human health or environmental impacts connected to the coal ash storage at Gallatin.
